A week before the primary election, two unions and an environmental group put up an website disputing political claims by state House Rep. Pono Chong, who is running in the newly reapportioned 48th District.
The Sierra Club of Hawaii, University of Hawaii Professional Assembly and Hawaii Government Employees Association have endorsed Chong’s opponent, state Rep. Jessica Wooley.
Chong is the House majority leader.
At a news conference Friday, Sierra Club Hawaii Executive Director Robert Harris said an inundation of mailers in the past few weeks could mislead voters on Chong’s voting record.
Harris said NotPono.org attempts to distinguish Chong’s "campaign rhetoric" from his actual voting record, including his stand on big development.
The groups criticized Chong’s vote to remove solar tax credits and challenged Chong’s claim that he helped end Furlough Fridays in the public schools. Wooley has said Chong did not support a petition calling for a special legislative session on Furlough Fridays.
Chong said in a statement Friday he wanted to eliminate a solar tax loophole that allowed homeowners to claim multiple tax credits instead of one — a loophole that could cost the state tens of millions in lost revenues.
He also said there weren’t enough votes to call for a special legislative session on the issue of Furlough Fridays and he supported funding to end it during the regular session.
