Coach Danny Matsumoto says only one thing about the condemned bleachers and renovation project at Waianae High School’s football field: “I’m grateful.”
Matsumoto confirmed that the Seariders will have no home games this fall, thanks to some unfortunate timing. Approval for the renovation — the center area of bleachers has been condemned for years — came through only recently. The project is expected to be completed no later than January.
Waianae fans will be tasked with the challenge of driving to all games — no easy accomplishment with Waianae being the farthest destination in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West.
“There’s nothing we can control about it, so there’s no sense in complaining,” said Matsumoto, who is a counselor at the school.
“It’s disappointing,” all-state defensive tackle Kennedy Tulimasealii said. “We found out when school started (last week). But now we’re getting used to the idea that we’re going to be road warriors.’ ”
Previous renovation led to new bleachers on each end of the field in recent years.
The Seariders meet Farrington on Friday in a nonconference game at Radford’s John Velasco Stadium.
