Food Network Magazine is featuring the Fresh Ahi Sandwich at Kaka‘ako Kitchen in it’s “50 Sandwiches, 50 States” feature, calling it a “must-try” sandwich in Hawaii.
“This is not your usual tuna sandwich: It’s a juicy ahi steak with teriyaki sauce on a purple taro bun,” the editors write.
The magazine sampled numerous sandwiches in all 50 states to come up with their picks, which run in the upcoming September issue.
Russell Siu’s gourmet plate-lunch eatery at Ward Centre is described as Euro-Island style, which combines Asian ingredients with European culinary influences.
Other winning sandwiches include a reindeer sausage sandwich from Cafe 817 in Anchorage, Alaska; a molasses-rubbed pork belly sandwich from Bunk Sandwiches in Portland, Ore.; “Oyster Loaf” from Casamento’s Restaurant in New Orleans, La.; and “Chicken Parm” from Parm in New York City.
Magazine staff spent six months sampling sandwiches across the country for the annual survey of best dishes. In past years, it focused on burgers and pizza.
