Ching moves on to match play
Pepperdine sophomore Alina Ching (71—141) was the only Hawaii player to advance to match play at the 112th U.S. Women’s Amateur golf tournament being played this week at The Country Club in Cleveland. Ching finished medal play in a tie for seventh Tuesday, five shots back of medalist Hyo-Joo Kim of Korea.
Reigning state high school champion Kacie Komoto (74—151) was 77th and two-time state high school champion Kristina Merkle (75—152) 82nd. The top 64 move to match play today.
Cabico wins, but Kunioka advances
Hoakalei’s Niel Cabico won the Aloha Section Assistant Championship on Tuesday at Kapolei Country Club, but Turtle Bay apprentice Kyle Kunioka will represent the Aloha Section PGA at the 36th National Car Rental PGA Assistant Championship in November.
Cabico fired a 3-under-par 69 in the final round. His 36-hole total of 142 was four shots better than Kunioka (72) and five ahead of Ryan Michimoto.
Cabico is not eligible for the $100,000 national event, so Kunioka will go to The PGA Golf Club (Wanamaker Course) in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Cabico won $1,000 for the local title.
George hired as BYUH softball coach
Brigham Young-Hawaii has a new softball coach. The school announced Tuesday that it hired Dave George for the post.
George, from Surprise, Ariz., replaces Scott Lowe, who will continue as BYUH’s assistant athletic director and sports information director.
George has been a college, high school and club-level coach for many years.
George served as head coach at Hill College (Texas) and was also an interim head coach at Howard College (Texas).
