9th Circuit Court holds conference on Maui
The 9th U.S. Circuit Judicial Conference opens on Maui today, with Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy addressing the session.
Kennedy will touch on issues affecting the judiciary beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Maui in Kaanapali.
The opening session also will include recognition of Japanese-American soldiers who fought the enemy during World War II, according to David Madden, assistant circuit executive.
Maui native Eichi Oki, an Army veteran who served in Italy and France as a member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, will lead the conference in the Pledge of Allegiance. Oki is the father of the U.S. District Chief Judge Susan Oki Mollway of Honolulu.
The conference on Maui has come under criticism from Republican U.S. Sens. Jeff Sessions of Alabama and Charles Grassley of Iowa, the ranking members of the Budget and Judiciary committees, respectively, who argue it’s a misuse of government funds.
White House honors Waianae man
A Waianae father of 11 has been honored by the White House for his work as a Parent-Teacher Association leader in his community.
The White House says Calvin Endo was one of 12 people nationwide honored Friday as “Champions of Change” for their PTA work.
The father of five girls and six boys retired from the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard after 32 years of civil service and three years in the Army.
After retirement, he became Waianae High School’s parent and community representative. He’s also education chairman for the Waianae Neighborhood Board.

Drunken driving crackdown set
Hawaii County police will increase enforcement of drunken driving laws as part of a national campaign called "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over," which runs Sunday through Sept. 5.
To help raise awareness of the upcoming campaign, the Police Department’s Traffic Services Section plans a sign-waving event on Kamehameha Avenue in Hilo from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Volunteers are encouraged to participate.
Impaired driving presents a potential danger to everyone the driver encounters, police say. So far this year, Hawaii County police have made more than 800 DUI arrests, and 12 of the 24 traffic fatalities this year involved drugs, alcohol or both, the department says.
Police remind the public that the county Mass Transit Agency maintains a Shared-Ride Taxi program. Every individual is entitled to buy subsidized taxi coupons for as low as $2 each and use them with participating taxi companies. For details, call 961-8744 or visit www.heleonbus.org/ shared-ride-taxi-program.
