Oahu got off to a tough start in the Cal Ripken World Series on Sunday, dropping its first game 11-8 to Newtown (Conn.) in Aberdeen, Md.
Kyson Donahue doubled, homered and drove in four runs and Jarron Carter also went deep for the Shockers, who next play Maryland today at 7 a.m.
The top three of five teams in each division advance to the seeded rounds beginning on Thursday.
Newtown (2-0), the New England regional champion, scored six runs in the fourth inning and put away the game with three in the top of the sixth.
Ryne Oshiro went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, and Matthew Inaba scored three times for Oahu (0-1), the Pacific Southwest regional champion, which led 2-0 after the first inning.
The Shockers used four different pitchers in the game.
Oahu fell behind 8-3, but cut the deficit to two in the fourth when Donahue hit a three-run homer to center.
The Shockers added a run in the fifth on a solo homer by Carter before Newtown put up three runs in the sixth.
