Pac-Five is sporting a new look this year — burnt orange like the University of Texas, but when the Wolfpack visited Mililani for a football game Friday night, they got burned.
The Trojans improved to 2-0 this season with a 35-7 rout of Pac-Five. Quarterback Jarin Morikawa led the attack by completing 22 of 34 passes for 218 yards and three touchdowns. He also scored a rushing touchdown, and he completed passes to nine receivers.
"They (Pac-Five) had a three-man rush and didn’t put too much pressure on," Mililani coach Rod York said. "The O-line gave him (Morikawa) time and the receivers ran great routes."
The Mililani defense shut down the Wolfpack offense, limiting it to 96 total yards, including only 34 through the air. Pac-Five’s only touchdown came on a kickoff return.
Mililani’s Tamatoa Silva led the way defensively. He had two fumble recoveries and a sack.
"Hard work by the defense set it up for us," York said. "They took care of the (Pac-Five) run game. Our defensive line is our strength, and (Silva’s) a beast."
The Trojans took a 21-7 first-quarter lead on Morikawa’s TD passes to Ekolu Ramos for 33 yards and Erren Jean-Pierre for 18. Dayton Furuta added to the scoring with a 28-yard touchdown off right tackle.
Nicholas Kwon kept it close briefly for the Wolfpack, sprinting through a pack of blockers for a 96-yard kickoff return for a temporary 7-7 tie.
Running a no-huddle offense, Morikawa and backup Ryan Reedy kept the Pac-Five defenders off balance again in the second half. Morikawa went around left end for a 5-yard score and also hit the speedy Ramos for his second TD of the night, this time from 34 yards out.
Reedy, meanwhile, also had an effective night behind center, finishing 10-for-12 for 57 yards.
"We planned to use both quarterbacks," York said. "I told him he (Reedy) would play last week and he only got in for two plays, so I felt bad and wanted to use him a lot tonight."
Kwon also came up with an interception for the Wolfpack to go along with his kickoff-return TD.
Pac-Five sophomore quarterback Cody Kim, who was hurt twice in the game, was limited to five completions for 11 yards.
Backups Reece Alvarado and Kekoa Blaisdell threw for the team’s 23 other passing yards.
"We’re young on offense," Pac-Five coach Kip Botelho said. "We’ve got to get better there. Defensively, we played tough. It’s just that (the defense) was on the field too long."
