The Hawaii women’s soccer team continued its recent futility in season openers, falling 2-0 to Nevada at Mackay Stadium in Reno, Nev., on Friday.
UH gave up two first-half goals to the Wolf Pack — those being the only two shots the Pack attempted in the half — and could not muster a score despite outshooting Nevada 8-4 for the game.
The former Western Athletic Conference rival, looking to avenge a 5-0 loss at Hawaii last year, stymied the Rainbow Wahine early by swarming the back line with a 4-5-1 alignment.
"They had a lot of motivation. They were kind of still burning up over that," second-year UH coach Michele Nagamine said. "This is a game Nevada’s looked forward to all year; they play very well at home. (For us) I attribute a lot of it to first-game jitters and a lack of familiarity with each other. There was a lot of miscommunication."
She also said fitness and the high altitude of Reno were factors as UH went winless in a fifth straight season opener.
Nevada’s Chelsea Fricke struck home on a 40-yard set piece in the 19th minute and Kori Disarufino added an 18-yard cross shot off keeper Kanani Taaca in the 38th minute.
"I thought we outpossessed them, especially in the (scoreless) second half," Nagamine said. "But I have to give them credit, they scored two great goals. We created our opportunities … but couldn’t put anything away."
Sophomore midfielder Krystal Pascua attempted half of UH’s shots in the loss, but only one was on goal.
UH dropped the 13th of its past 14 mainland games going back to 2010. It was the first time since 1994, the program’s inaugural season, that the Wahine opened up on the road.
Afterward, Nagamine announced Taaca, Rachel Domingo and Christy Watanabe as team captains.
The Wahine continue their road trip at UNLV on Sunday. Kickoff is 3 p.m. Hawaii time.
