With six days until the season opener, the Hawaii football team has installed its game plan and assembled starting roles.
“We got done what we needed to get done,” head coach Norm Chow said following Saturday’s practice, the 23rd of preseason training.
The offense is in the control of Sean Schroeder, who was named the No. 1 quarterback on the fourth day of training camp. Since then, Schroeder is playing with more confidence.
“I do feel comfortable,” said Schroeder, who moved to Hawaii in June after earning a bachelor’s degree at Duke. “I’ve been here for two months. When I first got here, the guys welcomed me with open arms. Now that I am the guy in the huddle, that’s my huddle. It’s my responsibility as the quarterback to establish leadership."
Chow said: “That’s the goal. You can’t be a quarterback and not have command. He’s smart enough to command the huddle and get the job done. Schroeder has that ‘it’ factor. What is it? I don’t know how to describe it. You just know who has it. You just do.”
Chow said in two-back sets, the Warriors will go with Joey Iosefa and Will Gregory. In a one-back formation, Chow said, “it will be Joey or Will.”
Scott Harding is the No. 1 strongside receiver. Billy Ray Stutzmann, Trevor Davis and Chris Gant are the single-side receivers. If Harding needs a break, Stutzmann will slide to the strong side.
Craig Cofer is the No. 1 tight end. Miah Ostrowski will be the slotback in three-receiver sets. When the Warriors need a bigger inside receiver or backfield blocker, Ryan Hall will be used.
The No. 1 offensive line is left tackle Blake Muir, left guard Kapua Sai, center Ben Clarke, right guard Dave Lefotu and right tackle Sean Shigematsu. With a left-handed starting quarterback, Shigematsu is regarded as the blind-side tackle.
“I like that,” said Shigematsu, who has fully recovered from last year’s knee surgery.
On the defensive line, Paipai Falemalu and Beau Yap are the ends, Siasau Matagiese is the 3-technique tackle and Moses Samia is the nose tackle.
The linebackers are Art Laurel on the strong side, T.J. Taimatuia in the middle and George Daily-Lyles on the weak side.
The corners are Mike Edwards and Tony Grimes, and the safeties are John Hardy-Tuliau and Bubba Poueu-Luna. Mike Sellers can play safety and nickelback. Ne’Quon Phillips is the third cornerback.
The coaches are working to finalize the 64-player travel roster. But several freshmen — including running back Steven Lakalaka and linebackers Benny Fonua and Jerrol Garcia-Williams — are expected to make next weekend’s road trip.
Garcia-Williams and Fonua both wore No. 36 during Saturday’s scrimmage featuring the newcomers and scout players. It seemed like they were everywhere.
Garcia-Williams had a sack and three tackles, including one after fighting past 240-pound fullback Marcus Langkilde.
“When you play, you’re not supposed to fear anybody,” said Garcia-Williams, who is used as a strongside linebacker and the blitzing position known as lobo.
Fonua had the loudest tackle when he flattened receiver Chinedu Amadi in the flat.
“Coach Chow said he doesn’t recruit freshmen to redshirt,” Daily-Lyles said. “It’s obvious, those guys can play.”
Chow said Garcia-Williams and Fonua are “very much a part” of the Warriors’ plans this year.
The Warriors will have today off, then participate in meetings and conditioning drills on Monday. They resume full workouts on Tuesday.
“We’ve been ready,” Daily-Lyles said. “It’s the minor details, the oh-by-the-ways, as we call them, and making sure we’re on the same page and getting mentally ready for this game.”
