Three Nanakuli schools were locked down with students inside Tuesday after a domestic argument turned into a two-hour barricade situation that ended peacefully.
Police said an officer responded at 1:15 p.m. to a domestic dispute at a Haleakala Avenue house and a man confronted the officer and then grabbed a woman who broke free. The man then barricaded himself inside the home and yelled at officers outside, police said.
A police spokeswoman said Specialized Services Division officers also responded to a report of a man who barricaded himself inside the house and was possibly armed.
The Department of Education said Nanakuli Elementary, Nanakuli High and Intermediate and Nanaikapono Elementary schools were locked down about 1:45 p.m.
Police also shut down Haleakala Avenue.
The man inside the home surrendered to police at 3:15 p.m.
Police arrested him on suspicion of kidnapping and abuse of a household member.
At the schools, students had to remain inside their classrooms, away from doors and windows.
"I was scared," said Christina Ayala, 13, an eighth-grader at Nanakuli High and Intermediate School. "I was hiding underneath my desk."
Alecia Unpingco, 43, said she learned about the lockdown through text messages from her son, 17, a student at Nanakuli High. She tried calling Nanaikapono to check on her younger children, but couldn’t get through.
