Carll claims spot in Sony Open
Kevin Carll of Honolulu shot an 8-over-par 80 in windy conditions and finished with a two-round score of 7-over 151 to win the Aloha Section Professional Championship golf tournament at Mauna Kea Golf Course on Tuesday.
Carll, the head professional at Waialae Country Club, won the $3,000 first prize and earned a spot in the PGA Tour’s Sony Open in January.
Hilo’s Kevin Hayashi placed second at 153 and will advance with Carll to the Professional National Championship at Sunriver Resort in Oregon next June.
Kawate advances to USGA Senior Amateur
Michael Kawate beat out 18 golfers at the 2012 USGA Senior Amateur Championship Qualifier, held at Pearl Country Club on Tuesday. The qualifier hosted men’s golfers from California and Hawaii.
Kawate, of Aiea, shot an 18-hole score of 1-over-par 73 and will compete in the USGA Senior Amateur, Sept. 29 through Oct. 4, at Mountain Ridge Country Club in West Caldwell, N.J.
Cyrus Whitney of Honolulu was named the first alternate after shooting 74 and Kahuku’s Phillip Anamizu will be the second alternate after his 75.
