The 49-year-old Waipahu man who prompted the lockdown of three Nanakuli schools Tuesday afternoon was convicted of manslaughter in 1984 in a stabbing death and is on parole after a terroristic threatening conviction last year.
Hawaii Paroling Authority records show that Gerald L. Fuentes, originally charged with murder, pleaded no contest to manslaughter in the stabbing death of a 25-year-old woman in her North Kona apartment in 1983. He served six years of a 10-year sentence and completed his parole in 1994.
Fuentes also was convicted last year of terroristic threatening, a class C felony, and is serving five years’ probation. He was convicted three times for misdemeanor abuse of a family or household member, twice last year and previously in 1995.
Fuentes was charged Wednesday with kidnaping, abuse of a household member, auto theft and fourth-degree theft. His bail was set at $300,000.
On Tuesday, police responded at 1:15 p.m. to a domestic dispute at a Haleakala Avenue house and the suspect confronted the officer and then grabbed a woman, but she was able to break free. The man then barricaded himself inside the home and yelled at officers outside, police said. Specialized Services Division officers also responded to the scene.
Nanakuli Elementary, Nanakuli High and Intermediate and Nanaikapono Elementary schools were locked down about 1:45 p.m.
The suspect surrendered to police at 3:15 p.m.
