Top-ranked Kahuku showed little rust despite playing only its second game of the season.
Aofaga Wily, who missed most of the week’s practices after getting all four of his wisdom teeth pulled, rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns on just eight carries to lead the Red Raiders to a 56-7 victory over Kailua on Friday night at Carleton Weimer Field.
Kahuku (2-0, 1-0), whose only other win came against Punahou two weeks ago, won its OIA Red East opener against Kailua (0-4, 0-2), which has already played four times.
"It’s been slow but good," Kahuku coach Reggie Torres said of the start of the season. "We’re an experienced team, but we’re also a young team, so it was good to get a lot of guys some playing time."
Fresh off a 225-yard performance against Punahou, Wily didn’t get the start at running back, but he was inserted into the game midway through Kahuku’s opening drive.
The senior had his wisdom teeth pulled on Aug. 22 and wasn’t sure if he’d be able to play until late this week.
"It’d been bothering me and giving me headaches, so I wanted to take the opportunity of our bye to get them all," Wily said. "I honestly didn’t think (I’d play) because the pain was so sore."
Wily took his second carry of the game 40 yards for his first score and added a 14-yard touchdown run later in the first quarter to put Kahuku up 13-0.
The Red Raiders exploded for 29 points in the second quarter, including a 26-yard interception return to pay dirt by Jayven Mohetau that gave them a 28-0 lead.
Senior Kawehena Johnson made a leaping catch over two defenders for a 43-yard touchdown reception and backup quarterback Tuli Wily-Matagi found Will Cravens for a 17-yard score to give Kahuku a 42-0 halftime lead.
Kailua totaled 61 yards on its first nine plays but finished with only 65 total yards for the half.
"We played tighter coverages," Torres said. "We were giving them a lot of area underneath to make plays and we had to come up and challenge them and you saw (defensive back Motuga Galeai) come up and make plays for us."
Kailua quarterback Kahaku Iaea finished 13-for-29 for 96 yards. Running back Jarrin Young, who finished with 68 yards on the ground, scored Kailua’s only touchdown on a 43-yard scamper early in the fourth quarter.
Lasselle Thompson opened the second half with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and Johnson had a 96-yard return late in the game called back because of a penalty.
