Darnell Arceneaux, a former Saint Louis School head coach and star quarterback, will be the color analyst on OC Sports’ telecasts of University of Hawaii football games.
"At this point in my life, I’m going to take a step out of coaching right now to do some broadcasting," Arceneaux said. "It allows me to take care of some things I need to take care of. It gives me an opportunity to do something I’ve always wanted to do."
Arceneaux replaces Darren Hernandez.
The NCAA has restrictions on conversations between college and high school coaches. Hernandez is Kapolei High’s head coach. Last year, there were no in-game interviews with Greg McMackin, who was UH’s head coach. This year, head coach Norm Chow has agreed to answer a couple of questions before going to the locker room at halftime.
Arceneaux was a successful high school coach after playing at the University of Utah. He was 9-2 when he coached Saint Louis to the state final in 2003. He was Mililani High’s head coach for three years before returning to Saint Louis in 2010.
Arceneaux led the Crusaders to the 2010 state championship.
They were 6-4 in 2011.
Arceneaux announced his resignation in June.
He worked the UH summer football camps.
"I spent a lot of time with the (UH) coaching staff," Arceneaux said. "It should be a lot of fun to do the games with Rob."
Robert Kekaula returns as the play-by-play announcer.
Lori Santi and DanMeisenzahl will be the sideline reporters.
CB Phillips fearless
Freshman cornerback Ne’Quan Phillips made a strong first impression.
"He’s a very confident young man," Chow said.
Three months ago, Phillips was attending his senior prom. This past Saturday, he was defending two of the nation’s best receivers — USC’s Robert Woods and Marqise Lee.
"I wasn’t intimidated," said Phillips, who recovered a fumble. "I was ready for it. The coaches put us in the right spot to make plays."
Phillips was summoned after cornerback Tony Grimes struggled early. Chow said Grimes is "fine," and will continue to have a large role in the Warriors’ defensive plans.
"When he plays, I support him, and when I play, he supports me," Phillips said of Grimes. "We’re competitors, but off the field, we’re like a family."
Phillips is admittedly at ease after the NCAA reaffirmed his eligibility two weeks ago.
"Once I was cleared, I was happy after that," Phillips said.
Assistant coach Chris Demarest, who recruited Phillips, said: "He has tenacity. He’s a fierce competitor. He wants to win. He’s only going to get better and better. I’m very proud of him."
O-linemen getting healthy
Offensive lineman FrankLoyd Jr., who did not play against USC because of an ankle injury, is expected to be ready for the Warriors’ next game, against Lamar on Sept. 15.
Offensive lineman Jordan Loeffler, who underwent a hand procedure three weeks ago, also should be available.
