Punter Alex Dunnachie and quarterback Cayman Shutter will be suspended for the Hawaii football team’s next two games, but will be allowed to play in the nationally televised road game against Brigham Young on Sept. 28.
Both had been suspended after pleading no contest to separate charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Dunnachie had been told he would be suspended for an "indefinite" number of games. Shutter’s original suspension was for four games.
With both suspensions now set at three games, Shutter’s punishment is being reduced by one game.
"Everybody deserves a second chance," head coach Norm Chow said. "They’ve been remorseful. They’ve done everything we’ve asked of them. … Now they have a chance to compete for playing time."
While on suspension, both players were allowed to practice, remain on scholarship and attend classes.
Dunnachie was arrested in July. He entered his plea on Aug. 3, and was sentenced on Aug. 24. He was fined $200 and required to undergo an alcohol assessment and attend driver’s education. His license was revoked for a year. But he is allowed to drive under a permit requiring an ignition lock that prevents a car from starting if there is any trace of alcohol on his breath.
"Ever since the decision came out, it was about moving forward and what I can do next to benefit the team," said Dunnachie, who was raised in Australia. "Every time I get to put on the ‘31,’ it’s always a good feeling. When it was taken away, it was one of the worst things that could possibly happen. The chance (Chow has) given me to come back and prove myself to my teammates and coaches means a lot. I feel I’m taking advantage of the opportunity. I’m very grateful to be back with the team. They’re my family out here."
Shutter, a Punahou graduate, was arrested in March. He received a punishment similar to Dunnachie’s when he was sentenced in June.
"It was a bad mistake I made," Shutter said. "I paid the consequences in the courts and on the field."
Shutter also installed an ignition lock, which costs about $100 a month.
"I’m going to serve the remaining two games (of suspension) and be ready to contribute whether as a backup or competing for the spot. I’ll continue to do what’s asked of me."
Receiver/returner Scott Harding has served as punter in Dunnachie’s absence. Chow said Shutter will compete for a spot in the quarterback rotation.
