A month after reassigning its athletic director, the University of Hawaii-Manoa has begun soliciting applications for a permanent successor.
The advertisement, which invites applications "for best consideration" by Sept. 28, was posted on the school’s website Wednesday. It said a review of applications will begin Sept. 21 and "continue until the position is filled."
It does not list an annual salary, which the posting said is "commensurate with education and experience." A spokeswoman said it is "negotiable."
The contract of the last AD, Jim Donovan, called for an annual salary of $240,000.
Donovan was reassigned to an as-yet-unannounced position in the Manoa Chancellor’s office Aug. 12.
Rockne Freitas has been acting AD since July 11 and has so far said he will not apply.
Minimum qualifications for the position include a bachelor’s degree, three years of athletic administration experience, demonstrated fiscal integrity and expertise. "Desireable qualifications" include a master’s degree in business administration or other related field or terminal degree from an accredited college or university, "demonstrated experience as a senior executive administrator in a Division I athletic program" and "demonstrated sensitivity and perceptiveness necessary to function successfully in a multicultural environment while effectively conveying the sense of being a Hawaiian place of learning."
In a mass email to students, staff and faculty late Wednesday, Manoa Chancellor Tom Apple suggested the search advisory committee can interpret a letter from coaches recommending Freitas as AD how it wishes.
Three of the coaches who signed the letter, Norm Chow, Dave Shoji and Laura Beeman, are on the committee.
