After being shut out in the season opener at Nevada, few would have predicted a school-record tying streak of unbeaten games to follow for the Hawaii women’s soccer team.
Yet there it is: The Rainbow Wahine (5-1-2) can set a new program mark with an eighth consecutive win or tie on Friday vs. Washington State in Pullman, Wash.
"I think we have a lot of confidence going into this game, due to the fact that we’ve been doing so well at home and have been home for a while (six games)," senior goalkeeper Kanani Taaca said. "We’re really looking forward to playing on the road again."

The Cougars (4-1) of the Pac-12 figure to be the Wahine’s toughest test to date, having lost only to No. 4 Duke. WSU is receiving votes in the NSCAA Top 25 poll.
"It will be the toughest team (we’ve faced)," UH coach Michele Nagamine said from Seattle. "We’re expecting a very good game on Friday night."
UH is 4-27-1 all-time against Pac-12 teams, including 0-4 against WSU. And the Wahine are 2-13 in their past 15 on the mainland.
"We’ve been a pretty poor performance team on the road," Nagamine said. "But hopefully this year, with a little more experience under our belt, and experiencing our first road win so early in the season against UNLV (on Aug. 19), I’m hoping we can carry this momentum forward."
Wazzu beat UH 3-1 in Nagamine’s debut as coach last season at Waipio Peninsula.
"Last year against Washington State, we went in a little gun-shy. … I think most of the kids thought we would compete, but winning would be really hard. I think this year is more, ‘Hey, we really want to see how we measure up.’ So we need to have a good game. They really want to kind of continue the momentum and not disrespect all the hard work and effort that’s come before this game."
UH left home on a high note after beating Detroit 2-1 in overtime on Sunday — a win that equaled last season’s victory total. The team spent all of Wednesday traveling on two flights and a bus.
"The kids know there’s no whining. This is just how we roll," Nagamine said.
While the Wahine have consistently made things interesting — winning by a single goal in all four victories over Division I teams this season — they still lead the Big West Conference in goals (18) and assists (13).
Sophomore forward Tiana Fujimoto continues to lead the conference in scoring with six goals. She’s registered a point, by goal or assist, in six of eight matches.
UH, hit hard by injuries from the start, has Alex Gerrain (head), Carly Mottram (ankle) and Michelle Nakasone (head) back.
