The state Campaign Spending Commission has fined State Rep. Karen Awana $6,800 for campaign finance reporting violations dating to 2008.
Awana (D, Kalaeloa-Nanakuli) failed to file accurate campaign finance reports, did not promptly deposit campaign contribution checks and failed to maintain campaign-finance records for five years, the commission said.
Awana previously paid a $1,900 fine last year for campaign finance violations.
Gary Kam, the commission’s general counsel, said Awana has not answered communications from the commission. “She hasn’t been responding,” he said.
Awana, who faces Glenn Butler, a Republican, in the November election, could not be reached for comment about the latest fine.
The commission also fined state Rep. Mele Carroll (D, Lanai-Molokai) $462 for filing a campaign finance report late. Carroll faces Simon Russell, a Republican, in November.
