BYUH setter Chen honored by PacWest
Brigham Young-Hawaii setter Ying Chun Chen won the first Pacific West Conference Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week award of the season.
Chen, a sophomore from Taiwan, averaged a conference-best 11.5 assists per set as the Seasiders went 2-2 to start the season. The award recognized matches played Aug. 31 to Sept. 2.
For the week, Chen ranked second in the PacWest with 161 total assists and tied for first with nine aces.
BYU-Hawaii currently is 5-2 and ranked No. 15 in the AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 poll.
HPU sweeps Chaminade in volleyball
Samantha Rummans had 11 kills and Sanoe Recca added 10 as Hawaii Pacific beat Chaminade 25-13, 27-25, 25-18 in a women’s volleyball match Wednesday night at McCabe Gym.
HPU’s Pihanakealoha Kea had 31 assists and 10 digs.
The second set was tied 19 times, with the Sea Warriors scoring the final two points on a Chaminade hitting error and a kill by Christina Furrer.
Chaminade’s Crystal Powell and Matia Spencer each had nine kills.
HPU improved to 6-2; Chaminade dropped to 3-5.
