The Republik’s fire safety system gets OK
Honolulu Fire Department inspectors have approved the fire safety system at new concert venue The Republik, two weeks after hundreds of people were turned away from an Aug. 30 concert at the former China House restaurant site on Kapiolani Boulevard.
A concert by Chevelle was held at the venue Saturday night.
Fire Capt. Carlton Yamada said inspectors tested the venue’s fire alarm and automatic sprinkler system.
Fire inspectors are allowing up to 1,000 people, but nightclub owners have not completed their permit application with the city Department of Planning and Permitting regarding their occupancy load type, he said.
"Fire inspectors are not going to stand in the way because of that," Yamada said Saturday.
Turbine transfer will close roads
Sempra U.S. Gas & Power and BP Wind Energy large semi-trucks carrying wind turbine components are scheduled to travel from a staging site near Kahului Harbor through South Maui to the Auwahi Wind project site in Ulupalakua for a six-week period beginning Tuesday.
The trucks will travel on weekdays between 5 and 10 p.m. To minimize traffic impacts, no more than three oversized loads will be moved per day.
Temporary road closures lasting about 15 minutes will occur at the intersection of Wailea Ike and Wailea Alanui Drive, and near the Makena Beach & Golf Resort.
When trucks reach Upcountry Piilani Highway, intermittent full road closures will take place between mile markers 16 and 20, lasting approximately 30 minutes.
