It was the kind of game a Farrington defensive purist could enjoy.
The second-ranked Governors locked down on McKinley’s offense for a 26-7 win on Saturday night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.
Farrington harassed Tigers quarterback Denzel Kalahiki-Gasper into four interceptions, including two by David Luafatasaga. The Govs also recovered three fumbles to stifle McKinley, which started off with an 84-yard bomb from Kalahiki-Gasper to Tyrell Tuiasosopo.
After that early jolt, the Tigers managed just 62 yards of offense the rest of the way.
Farrington (4-0 OIA Red East, 6-0 overall) has a bye next week before a showdown with arch rival Kahuku.
"It’s another week of trying to keep these guys occupied," Govs coach Randall Okimoto said, noting that offensive lineman Mitchell Boyd is close to returning after an early-season knee injury.
Coach Joseph Cho’s Tigers (1-2, 2-3) were unrelenting defensively, with linebacker Mathias Tuitele-Iafeta leading the charge. They limited Farrington’s potent ground attack to "only" 212 yards.
"Farrington’s good. They’re a powerhouse team, so I feel happy," said Tuitele-Iafeta, a 5-foot-11, 235-pound junior who was one of a few defenders to stand up Farrington’s powerful ball carriers. "They did what they had to do and we did what we had to do."
Govs running back Tyler Taumua managed to crack the 100-yard mark with his final carry and finished with 113 yards on 24 attempts.
Abraham Silva, the second-leading rusher in the state coming into the weekend, saw limited action after suffering a deep thigh bruise against Moanalua last week.
"What a good athlete. He hits the hole strong and gave us problems, just like he gave Kahuku," Okimoto said of Tuitele-Iafeta. "Their penetration was killing us."
