Health care providers and the general public will have an opportunity to bid on more than 3,000 items of medical equipment of the now-defunct Hawaii Medical Center during a live theater-style auction at the Westin Moana Surfrider Hotel over a three-day period from Oct. 2-4, beginning at 9 a.m. each day.
A Web simulcast will be held in conjunction with the live auction for bidders outside Hawaii. The auction is being conducted by Centurion Service on behalf of St. Francis Healthcare System, which now owns the two hospitals’ assets in Liliha and Ewa Beach.
Last month the parent company of the Queen’s Medical Center finalized a deal with St. Francis to acquire and reopen by fall 2013 the shuttered HMC-West in Ewa. The closing date of the sale is tentatively scheduled for October. Queen’s plans to renovate HMC-West for $73.2 million.
St. Francis said it has no plans to sell the closed HMC-East campus in Liliha and is planning to use it to provide nonhospital care to serve Hawaii’s growing older adult population. This might include operating a skilled nursing facility or assisted living center, but no definitive plans have been made.
There will be a preview day to give bidders an opportunity to inspect the merchandise on Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the two hospitals.
The auction includes a range of surgical, cardiology, radiology, respiratory, endoscopy, ophthalmic, laboratory, and monitoring equipment and instruments. Patient beds, stretchers, kitchen equipment and disposables also will be on sale.
St. Francis held garage sales at the hospital campuses in July and August, generating about $50,000 in combined proceeds. Proceeds from the garage sales and the auction have been earmarked for St. Francis services to benefit the community.
