$10M in grants will aid Native Hawaiians
Hawaii will receive more than $10 million in federal grants for Native Hawaiian education.
Hawaii’s congressional delegation in Washington, D.C., announced last week the money will go to 17 new programs and initiatives that support the education of Native Hawaiians.
The funding was awarded competitively to nonprofit organizations including schools, universities and churches.
Recipients include Partners in Development Foundation, Program for Afterschool Literacy Support and Keiki o ka Aina Preschool Inc.
Kapolei man dies of injuries from accident
A 76-year-old Kapolei man died Friday of injuries suffered in an Aug. 29 motorcycle crash on Kohala Mountain Road (Route 250) at the 18-mile marker in the North Kohala District, Hawaii County police said Monday.
Calvin B.T. Hoo died at 3:29 p.m. Friday at the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.
Police said Hoo was traveling north on Kohala Mountain Road when he ran off the right side of roadway and lost control of the motorcycle.
Emergency personnel took Hoo to North Hawaii Community Hospital. He was later flown to Honolulu.
Officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

It was the 30th traffic fatality on Hawaii island this year, compared with 15 at the same time last year.
Driver sought in fatal crash on Maui road
Maui police are looking for the driver of a car in a fatal hit-and-run crash.
Police said a man’s body was found in the middle of Paia Bypass Road on Sunday night. He appeared to have been hit by a vehicle traveling east that left the scene. His name was withheld pending notification of relatives.
Police suspect the vehicle that hit him is a 1997 or 1998 Mitsubishi Galant with front-end damage. It is missing at least one of the black plastic grille pieces above the front license plate.
It was Maui County’s 19th traffic fatality this year, compared with 12 at the same time last year.
