Under heavy security, a 23-year-old Makaha man accused of killing a one-time friend by shooting him in the head made his initial Hono­lulu District Court appearance Monday.

Chad Duran faces second-degree murder charges in the slaying of 26-year-old Christopher K. Medeiros, who was shot Wednesday. Duran allegedly shot Medeiros at the victim’s Makaha apartment on Lahaina Street.

Duran, dressed in blue prison overalls, did not speak during his appearance before District Judge Leslie Haya­shi. Represented by attorney Don Wilkerson, he will enter a plea at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in District Court. Duran’s bail is set at $750,000.

A court bailiff advised those in the public gallery not to address the defendant during the hearing, but an emotional family member was heard telling Duran, "Be strong." The hearing was attended by family and supporters of both Duran and Medeiros.

Eight deputy sheriffs were positioned throughout the small seventh-floor courtroom.

According to a police affidavit filed Monday in court, Duran told two police officers following the shooting that he had shot someone on Lahaina Street.

Medeiros was taken to Wai­anae Comprehensive Health Center with a facial gunshot wound. Due to the severity of his injuries, Medeiros was transported to the Queen’s Medical Center, where he died Thursday.

While a police officer was interviewing Duran’s uncle, the suspect told two police officers — without being asked — that "he had just shot somebody," the affidavit said.

Duran was arrested shortly after the shooting.

In 2010, Duran pleaded guilty to charges of drug promotion and use of drug paraphernalia. He was granted a deferred acceptance of his guilty plea, which would have allowed him to remain free and keep the convictions off his rec­ord if he stayed out of trouble.

However, he was jailed multiple times for probation violation and then ordered Aug. 16 to serve a 15-day intermittent sentence at Oahu Community Correctional Center, turning himself in on weekends beginning Aug. 17.

Medeiros also had an extensive criminal record with five felony convictions ranging from assault to theft. He completed a five-year sentence on July 31, 2011.
