Just three weeks ago, I wrote about South Korean rapper Psy and his song "Gangnam Style" going viral on the Internet with 72 million views on YouTube.
By the time you read this column, it should be well over 220 million views.
Psy was in New York City last week to make appearances on NBC’s "Today" show and ABC’s "Good Morning America" doing his signature horse dance. He also made an appearance on "The Ellen Show" in Los Angeles to provide a dance lesson to Ellen DeGeneres and guest star Britney Spears.
But what really put the icing on the cake was when "Saturday Night Live" did a Lids skit in which "Gangnam Style" was used to cheer up a worker — a Psy lookalike magically slipped out from behind the mall store’s sliding wall to do the horse dance. The skit concluded with the real Psy making an appearance to a cheering audience.
"Gangnam Style" last week reached No. 1 on iTunes’ top 10 songs chart, a Hallyu feat no other Korean entertainer has even come close to. Even though he is of average height and is not "celebrity thin," Psy has created a bookmark in the Korean entertainment industry.
