Kozuma leads Vulcans golfers
Hawaii-Hilo’s Corey Kozuma aced the final hole of the day and holds a two-stroke lead heading into today’s final round of the Western Washington Invitational in Bellingham, Wash.
Kozuma (‘Iolani ’10) leads Western Washington’s Mark Strickland (140) after posting a 6-under 138 (70-68) over two rounds on Monday at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.
Kozuma drilled a hole-in-one on the par-3 18th hole, his 36th and last hole of the day.
Through two rounds, Western Washington leads the team standings at 568, with Hawaii-Hilo (578) in second place after posting the day’s best round of 282 in the afternoon.
Fresno Pacific boots BYUH
Fresno Pacific defeated Brigham Young-Hawaii 6-2 in a men’s soccer match Monday in Laie.
The Sunbirds (4-3, 2-2 Pacific West Conference) took a 5-1 halftime lead after outshooting the Seasiders 11-2 in the first half.
Zak Epplette scored the lone first-half goal for the Seasiders (1-2-1, 0-2-1) on a free kick in the 15th minute. Chad Nahoolewa scored the other BYUH goal.
» The BYUH women battled to a 1-1 tie Monday following the men’s match.
After Fresno Pacific (1-3-3, 1-1-2 PacWest) struck first to take a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute, Terryn Soelberg scored to draw the Seasiders (4-1-1, 2-0-1) even.
Seasiders goalie Megan McCain finished with seven saves to help preserve the tie.
BYUH sweeps Grand Canyon in volleyball
The 12th-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s volleyball team swept No. 13 Grand Canyon 25-7, 25-20, 25-18 Monday night in Laie.
Sophomore Stella Chen had 19 kills to lead the Seasiders (8-2, 3-0 PacWest), and Lauren Hagemeyer added 13 kills, hitting a sizzling .542. Grand Canyon fell to 12-2 and 2-2.
Scott claims Jose Cuervo beach crown
Former University of Hawaii and Punahou volleyball player Sean Scott won the Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series national championship Sunday at Huntington Beach, Calif., with his partner John Hyden.
It was Scott and Hyden’s fifth title of the series and their last start this season. They defeated Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal 21-15, 21-12 in the final. Gibb and Rosenthal were playing their final match as a team.
Ma takes 2 Honolulu Masters titles
Former Brigham Young-Hawaii tennis player Rong Ma won the singles and doubles championships at the Honolulu Masters last weekend at the Oahu Club along with a wild card into January’s $50,000 Honolulu Challenger.
Ma defeated University of Hawaii junior Jonathan Brooklyn 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 in Saturday’s singles final to earn the wild card. Ma and UH junior Jared Spiker captured the doubles final, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 over Neils Shuhmann and Danilo Casanova.
