Man arrested, arson suspected in blaze
Police arrested a 44-year-old Kalihi man Tuesday at the scene of an early morning house fire.
The man was taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, police said.
Police have opened an arson investigation into the fire, which caused $75,000 worth of damage to the two-story house in Kalihi. Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
Ten people — nine adults and one child — lived in the nine-bedroom home, built in 2004, at 1520 Leilani St. Fire damaged the second floor of the structure.
The call for the two-alarm fire came in at 6:10 a.m. and it was extinguished less than an hour later, said Capt. Gary Lum, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman.
One person was hospitalized for smoke inhalation.
The Red Cross is assisting the home’s residents.
