UH baseball team to play exhibition
For the first time in Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso’s 11 seasons, the University of Hawaii baseball team will play two exhibition games at Les Murakami Stadium.
UH will host the Shanghai Sports Institute of China for games on Oct. 16 and 17. Admission is free.
The Rainbows are coming off their fourth straight 30-win season as they enter the Big West Conference. The ‘Bows return five starters, including reigning All-Western Athletic Conference shortstop Pi‘ikea Kitamura, and junior left-hander Jarrett Arakawa, who earned all-league honors over the summer in the Cape Cod League.
UH opens its regular season Feb. 15, 2013, against Oregon.
HPU benefit is Friday
Hawaii Pacific’s second annual S.H.A.R.X. Benefit is on Friday, featuring HPU’s second Hall of Fame class.
Softball coaching legend Howard Okita, men’s tennis standout Mikael Maatta, longtime basketball coach Tony Sellitto, volleyball star Gabriela Artigas and women’s cross country runner Nina Christensen will all be honored.
The event will be hosted by current ESPN SportsCenter anchor Neil Everett.
The event will take place at Pier 10 at Aloha Tower.
Chaminade loses in 3 sets
The Chaminade women’s volleyball team lost in three sets to host Fresno Pacific, 25-13, 23-25, 25-20 on Wednesday.
Freshman Brenda Walker led the Silverswords (4-8, 1-3 PacWest) with 12 digs and Kim Spring led the team with nine kills.
Chaminade next plays Dominican University on Friday.
Fujikawa way back
Honolulu’s Tadd Fujikawa shot an 8-over 80 and is 17 shots behind the leader after the first round of the eGolf Olde Sycamore Open in Charlotte, N.C.
Fujikawa posted a 41 on the front nine before a 39 on the back and is in a tie for 121st place.
UH women’s hoops adds HPU exhibition
The Hawaii women’s basketball team added an exhibition game against Hawaii Pacific on Dec. 18 at the Stan Sheriff Center, helping break up a period previously without Rainbow Wahine games from Dec. 1 to 28.
Including two exhibitions, there are now 21 home dates for UH in 2012-13.
The Wahine play a preseason exhibition vs. Hawaii-Hilo on Oct. 26, then open up at home against Tennessee-Martin on Nov. 16.
