Cellar smoke empties scope
Technicians worked on equipment at an Air Force observatory atop Haleakala on Thursday after generators used in the cooling of the telescope overheated, prompting an evacuation.
Maui County fire officials said smoke from the basement led to the evacuation of the building Wednesday night. Fire Department spokesman Lee Mainaga wasn’t able to say how many people were evacuated, or for how long.
The smoke affected only the Air Force GEODSS installation — no University of Hawaii facilities, said officials at the UH Institute for Astronomy.
GEODSS, or Ground-Based Electro-Optical Deep Space Surveillance, tracks objects in space, including orbiting junk.
Maui firefighters received the alarm at 6:14 p.m. No flames or injuries were reported.
College to turn box into house
Kauai Community College today will begin a project to turn a used shipping container into affordable housing.
The site will be blessed at 10:30 a.m. by the Rev. Wayne A. Vidinha Sr. of Ke Akua Mana Church in an area on the campus known as "The Farm."
The work will be done by students enrolled in the college’s introductory carpentry class, taught by instructor Robert Steurich.
"As builders we should always be searching for ways to build affordable housing and maintain the existing housing stock," said Steurich. "Students will learn building practices and procedures that result in a quality product."
The project is sponsored by Ho‘ouluwehi: The Sustainable Living Institute of Kauai, which was launched by the college in January.
