The Hawaii women’s soccer team has slipped back into road futility as it prepares for its first Big West Conference match.
Cal State Bakersfield topped the Rainbow Wahine 3-1 on Friday in Bakersfield, Calif., dealing UH (5-4-2) its third straight loss.
All three have come on the mainland since the Wahine tied their program mark for consecutive unbeaten games at seven. UH has dropped 16 of its past 18 road matches.
UH heads to Cal State Northridge (3-3-4) for its BWC debut at 3 p.m. Hawaii time on Sunday.
"People have to step it up," UH coach Michele Nagamine said. "We had too many holes on the field today. Too many people just didn’t do what they were supposed to do. When that changes, I expect us to be a much different team."
The Roadrunners (4-7-1) jumped on UH early with a header goal in the 13th minute. The 1-0 score stood for almost 50 minutes until CSUB scored again in the 72nd for a two-goal margin.
"That (early goal) deflated us a little bit," Nagamine said. "They were the better team tonight; they played two halves and we played one."
UH freshman Alex Gerrain scored on a putback of a Christy Watanabe shot for her first career goal in the 77th minute. But Bakersfield sealed the match with a goal in the 86th.
Senior goalkeeper Kanani Taaca recorded seven saves in the loss.
