1. Depleted
>> Situation: BYU 0, Hawaii 0, 11:43 remaining, first quarter, BYU ball, first and 10 at Hawaii 11
>> The Play: QB Taysom Hill rushes for 2 yards and is tackled by LB Art Laurel. DT Geordon Hanohano collides helmet to helmet with OL Kawika Anae and suffers what appears to be a serious neck injury on the play.
>> Impact: Hanohano did not return to the game. Hawaii is already very thin on the defensive interior, and DT Siasau Matagiese was also injured a few plays later and did not return. X-rays on both were negative, but it is unknown how long they will be out. DE Marcus Malepeai, playing out of position at tackle, was also injured early.
>> Hawaii defensive line coach Lewis Powell: “We came to Utah with three D-tackles, and we tried to convert Marcus into a D-tackle. Then three got hurt in the first quarter.”
2. Picked
>> Situation: BYU 7, Hawaii 0, 8:44 remaining, first quarter, Hawaii ball, second and 10 at Hawaii 33
>> The Play: On Hawaii’s first offensive series, QB Sean Schroeder is intercepted by S Daniel Sorensen at the BYU 39.
>> Impact: BYU’s drive is stopped by CB Ne’Quan Phillips’ interception at the Hawaii 13, but Sorensen’s interception is early evidence of the defensive dominance BYU will maintain throughout the game.
>> Hawaii receiver Billy Ray Stutzmann: “I guess it didn’t come together for us. It was a long night. We started out slow, and it kept going downhill from there. It was a rough night.”
3. Running free
>> Situation: BYU 14, Hawaii 0, 6:27 remaining, second quarter, BYU ball, first and 10 at BYU 32
>> The Play: Hill, above, runs through the middle of the Hawaii line and past the secondary for a 68-yard touchdown.
>> Impact: This play makes it clear BYU won’t have to do anything fancy on offense to win. Hill carries 15 times for 148 yards, and backup RB Jamaal Williams carries 15 times for 155 yards as BYU totals 396 yards rushing and 144 passing.
>> Hawaii defensive coordinator Thom Kaumeyer: “To give up 400 yards rushing means we didn’t give our offense any chance. That’s inexcusable. We’ve got to get that thing fixed.”
4. Cave in
>> Situation: BYU 20, Hawaii 0, 14:14 remaining, third quarter, Hawaii ball, second and 10 at Hawaii 20
>> The Play: Schroeder is sacked by LB Kyle Van Noy and fumbles. DB Matt Hadley recovers and BYU gets the ball at the Hawaii 3.
>> Impact: Two plays later Williams scores on a 3-yard run and BYU extends its lead to 27-0. BYU’s defense gets the ball deep on the Hawaii side on another Schroeder fumble late in the third quarter and scores again. BYU allows just 141 yards and wins the turnover battle 3-1.
>> BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall: “Our defense can still get better. I tell them that all the time. We have high expectations for them. We do have great players, our front three, our inside and outside linebackers and our safeties. They all have great abilities.”
5. Halted
>> Situation: BYU 40, Hawaii 0, 13:00 remaining, fourth quarter, Hawaii ball, fourth and 11 at BYU 28
>> The Play: DE Bronson Kaufusi hurries Schroeder, who throws incomplete for WR Trevor Davis.
>> Impact: Hawaii turns the ball over on downs after making its deepest penetration of the game and suffers its first shutout since 1998.
>> Hawaii head coach Norm Chow: “We’ve got to go back to the drawing board and work harder. Like I told the team, this is a big-boy business and nobody is feeling sorry for us. We can’t feel sorry for ourselves.”
