Network kicks off celebration
I love cartoons, so, of course, I’ll be using my DVR to record Cartoon Network’s 20th-anniversary lineup that starts today at 9 a.m.
The cable network’s monthlong celebration will kick off with a full day of birthday-themed episodes of “The Powerpuff Girls,” “Dexter’s Laboratory,” “Codename: Kids Next Door” and “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends,” alongside newer hits “Adventure Time” (100th episode), “The Amazing World of Gumball” and the season premiere of “Regular Show,” which just won an Emmy. The TV party continues each weekend in October, with classic theatrical shorts and network series episodes spotlighting the top six finalists in creatively named categories. Viewers can watch, then log on to CartoonNetwork.com to vote for their favorites. — Gary Chun
Once-dull marshmallow has finally come of age
It used to be that marshmallows were vanilla and Jet-Puffed. And while I’m still not one to turn my nose up at a good s’more, marshmallows are so much more these days, with hand-cut gourmet varieties cropping up at specialty food stores around town. My favorite is the passion fruit marshmallows from Butter Baked Goods, a Vancouver, British Columbia, company. The artfully layered, cheerfully colored confections are sold at Neiman Marcus, $8 for 10 marshmallows. — Donica Kaneshiro
Pattern pushes the panache
My boyfriend saw a palaka-print shirt and wanted a palaka cap. I Googled “palaka caps” and discovered localsonlyhawaii.com, which sells University of Hawaii palaka caps and visors in assorted colors for $42.95. What a great way to start off the new UH football season! The caps are also sold at Hilo Hattie’s Ala Moana store and NEX, the Navy Exchange. Visors are $39.95. — Caren Oshiro, Waipahu
Allen’s work carries positive messages
We often get so consumed with day-to-day busyness, it doesn’t hurt to be reminded that life’s a gift, just one per person. “Live the Life You Love” interpretations on canvas or wood are the perfect use of art as a note-to-self. Each sporting an excerpt from a Bob Marley quotation, the vibrant 4-inch-square pieces by local artist Jamie Allen offer a message on a medium subtle enough for those who have long left the huge bedroom posters of their teens behind. A variation with an inch of depth allows for solid placement on a shelf or desktop. Allen’s vision doesn’t stop there. See the scope of her work at www.jamierallen.com. These go for about $50 each at Community HI boutique, 22 S. Pauahi St.; 523-0001. — Ruby Mata-Viti
Stick with ‘kinesio tape’ to soothe aches
When the Honolulu Marathon rolls into town, scores of runners can be seen around town with “kinesio tape” stuck onto various parts of their bodies. I’m no runner, but I’ve found the stretchy tape useful for targeting everyday aches and pains. I’m always throwing my back out carrying groceries, picking things up awkwardly, tripping over something. And because I sit at a computer all day, these aches might take more than a week to recover on their own. The immediate application of this tape seems to clear them up within three or four days. You can get a sports medicine specialist to apply it, but you can also buy KT Tape, which provides precut strips. The website kttape.com has dozens of videos showing how to apply it for specific ailments. It’s $12.99 at Sports Authority and comes in a variety of colors. — Steven Mark
