Navy awards AECOM deal for Pacific work
The Navy says it has awarded a contract worth up to $85 million over five years to AECOM Technical Services Inc. as part of its environmental restoration program in the Pacific.
The service said Monday the contract is for the Los Angeles-based firm’s architecture, engineering, environmental and technical services.
Capt. Pete Lynch, vice commander of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Pacific, says its restoration program is to responsibly protect environments around active bases.
Officials say the work will mainly include services around bases in Hawaii and Guam.
AECOM Technology Corp. says it earned $69 million on $2.1 billion in revenue in its fiscal third quarter that ended June 30. Its stock was up 4 cents, or 19 percent, to $21.20 in afternoon trading Monday after closing at $21.16 Friday.
Repair work on Kalalau Trail now under way
A $1 million project to fix up sections of the Kalalau Trail on Kauai’s Na Pali Coast began last month.
The work will extend nine miles from Hanakapiai to the trail’s end at Kalalau Beach, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.
The project under contractor Pono Pacific Land Management LCC is expected to be finished by December 2013, the state said.
"Kalalau Trail is a world famous destination known as a premier back-country wilderness hiking experience," said William Aila, director of the department, in a statement Sept. 24. "This is a welcome and timely project to stem and reverse the erosive forces of nature and feral goats that have contributed to the deterioration of this rugged trail."
Trail work is under way on eroded sections near mile 8.
Each year, about 500,000 people hike the first two miles of the trail to Hanakapiai and up to the falls. In the past year, 8,710 hikers obtained permits to hike the 11 miles into Kalalau. Of those, 6,489 were visitors and 2,221 were residents, the state says.
