Tropical fruit headlines class
Learn to prepare dishes using tropical fruits and other produce when Julia Cabatu presents "Filipino Cooking Using Unusual Fruits and Vegetables," at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Oahu Urban Garden Center.
Taste samples of Cabatu’s sari sari, chicken marungay, banana and jackfruit lumpia, layered cassava dessert, kamote and katuday salad, and guayabano (soursop) chiller.
A Filipino cookbook will be for sale.

‘Beer for Boobs’ to aid Komen
REAL a gastropub will use its vast selection of beers to raise money for breast cancer research with "Beer for Boobs," a benefit Tuesday in which 10 percent of all beer sales will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
The event runs 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. at REAL, 1020 Auahi St.

Taste of Hilo to benefit HCC
More than 25 vendors will offer food and drink at the 14th Annual Taste of Hilo on Oct. 21.
Featured chef this year is Philip "Ippy" Aiona, a finalist in the "Next Food Network Star" competition. Aiona runs his family’s Italian restaurant, Solimene’s, in Waimea.
Participants include Aloha Mondays, Cafe Pesto, Encore & Kuhio Grille, Everything Ono, Hawaii Community College Culinary Arts, Hilo Rice Noodles Soup, Cousins Seafood & Bento, Oasis Cafe, Sansei Seafood Steak & Sushi Bar, Short N Sweet Bakery & Deli, Lehua Cafe and Hilo Coffee Mill.
A portion of proceeds will benefit scholarships at Hawaii Community College.

Celebrate Food Day with a vegan, gluten-free meal Oct. 24.
The menu: Cornbread with Kiawe Bean Flour & Kiawe Syrup Drizzle, Taro Stew with Collards, Green Salad with Hibiscus Vinaigrette and Lilikoi Mochi.
