Seasiders beat Azusa Pacific in volleyball
The No. 10 Brigham Young-Hawaii blitzed Azusa Pacific 25-17, 25-11, 25-15 to remain perfect in PacWest women’s volleyball action on Wednesday night in Laie.
Senior hitter Lauren Hagemeyer had eight kills and hit .438 to lead the Seasiders, while Tuli Tevaga added seven kills with no errors.
BYUH improved to 11-2 overall and 6-0 in league play. Azusa fell to 11-7 and 3-5.
Point Loma sweeps Chaminade
Freshman hitter Kelli LeClair had 13 kills to lead Point Loma Nazarene to a 25-13, 25-16, 25-22 victory over Chaminade in a PacWest volleyball match Wednesday night at McCabe Gym.
Senior hitter Whitney Viveiros (Kamehameha) led the Silverswords (6-11, 3-6 PacWest) with eight kills and junior hitter Crystal Powell (Word of Life) added six.
The Sea Lions improved to 7-9 and 3-4.
BYUH golf takes tri-match
Scott Pickering shot a one-over 73 to lead the Brigham Young-Hawaii men’s golf team to a tri-match win over Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade at the Koolau Golf Course on Wednesday.
The senior’s mark was seven shots better than the individual runners-up, BYUH’s Riley Bunker and HPU’s Travis Miller. BYUH carded 319 as a team to beat HPU (329) by 10 strokes. Chaminade was last at 347.
3 gymnasts earn national spots
Kalxyta Gamiao, Kelsi Carter and Ashlyn Takai of Hawaiian Island Twisters qualified for spots on Talent Opportunity Program teams after competing against 300 others at a USA Gymnastics national meet in Huntsville, Texas, in late Semptember.
Carter, 10, Gamiao, 9, and Takai, 9, will travel back to Texas in late November and early December to participate in training camps run by USA National Team coaches.
Fujikawa misses cut in eGolf
Moanalua graduate Tadd Fujikawa missed the cut at the eGolf Tour’s NorthStone Open on Wednesday in Huntersville, N.C., after shooting a two-round total of nine-over 151 at NorthStone Country Club.
He was tied for 109th among 122 entrants on the par-71 course. Leader Timothy Madigan shot a 10-under 132.
Local squad takes third in USTA event
A women’s tennis team from Kailua-Kona, representing the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section, took third at the recent USTA League 3.5 Adult National Championships, held at Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz.
Hawaii Pacific defeated a Northern California team from Roseville, 4-1, in the third-place match. Earlier, the Hawaii team lost to eventual champion Pacific Northwest, 2-3, in the semifinals. Hawaii reached the semis by winning its round-robin flight.
Team members were Ruth Ikehara, Carolyn Uyeda, Elizabeth Baeza, Jennifer Torcato, Tomoe Kimura, Roejean Scarbrough, Maria Sloan, Leilani Punihaole, Lovette Llantos, Solange Roy and Kam Oi Wigen.
