Suyetsugu contending in LPGA qualifying
Roosevelt and University of Hawaii graduate Xyra Suyetsugu put herself on the bubble going into today’s final round of the Stage II LPGA Qualifying Tournament.
Suyetsugu fired a third-round 74 Thursday and is tied for 78th in Venice, Fla. The top 70 and ties after today advance to final qualifying.
Suyetsugu is at 221 for the tournament. Maui’s Shayna Miyajima (75) is at 229 and Leilehua graduate Britney Choy dropped back to 85—233.
BYU-Hawaii men top Cal Baptist in OT
James Puertas scored 5:51 into overtime to give Brigham Young-Hawaii a 1-0 victory over Cal Baptist (7-3-1, 5-2) in a men’s Pacific West Conference soccer match on Thursday at Riverside, Calif.
Keeper Trevor Lesueur, in his first start of the season for the Seasiders (3-4-1, 2-4-1), made nine saves.
» At St. George, Utah, Hawaii Pacific and Dixie State played to a scoreless tie in a rain-soaked match.
Keeper Mael Lefebvre made nine saves for HPU (5-5-1, 5-2-1 PacWest) against the Red Storm (5-6-2, 4-3-2).
» At Azusa, Calif., Chaminade fell 5-1 to Azusa Pacific (8-3-1, 6-2). Sam Galloway scored the lone goal for the Silverswords (1-8-1, 1-6-1) in the 28th minute, cutting the Cougars’ lead to 2-1.
HPU women surprise Dixie State, 1-0
Senior forward KaUa Wall scored in the 19th minute as Hawaii Pacific overcame Dixie State and a 30-minute lightning delay for a 1-0 Pacific West Conference victory Thursday at St. George, Utah.
HPU improved to 4-7-1 and 3-4-1, while the Red Storm is 6-5-2 and 6-3-0.
» At Azusa, Calif., Shannon Righetti scored twice as Azusa Pacific outshot Chaminade 48-2 for a 7-0 victory. The Silverswords fell to 0-8 and 0-10, while Azusa Pacific is 7-5 and 6-2.
» At Riverside, Calif., Bernadette Witz scored in the 34th minute and Cal Baptist limited Brigham Young-Hawaii to one shot on goal for a 1-0 victory.
The Seasiders fell to 6-3-1 and 4-2-1, while the Lancers are 7-2-1 and 6-1.
2 share lead in LPGA Malaysia
Defending champion Na Yeon Choi shot a 6-under 65 in the LPGA Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur for a share of the lead with Hall of Famer Karrie Webb.
Choi was 5 under through 12 holes when first-round play was delayed because of lightning, then added a birdie on the par-4 14th and finished the bogey-free round with four pars.
Webb also had a bogey-free round, joining Choi atop the leaderboard. Former Honolulu resident Michelle Wie shot a 75.
