A fire on Friday severely damaged the first floor of this six-bedroom home at 47-563 Hui Iwa St. near Ahuimanu Elementary School. One person was home when the blaze began, but he escaped without injury. The fire spread to the second story, causing an estimated $450,000 in damage in this home and $5,000 in heat damage to a neighboring house.

Homeowner Mitsuko Higa spoke with a police officer Friday about the fire that gutted her Kahaluu home, the roof of which is visible at left. She and her husband, George, have lived there for 42 years; their daughter and son-in-law moved in about half a year ago. Firefighters estimated the house sustained $450,000 worth of damage.
