Both violent crimes and property crimes on Oahu fell during the first four months of 2012, according to numbers released by the Honolulu Police Department last week.
There were 723 violent crimes from January to April, down 12.5 percent from the 826 violent crimes during the first four months of 2011. Violent crimes, as defined by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Reporting program, are those that do injury, or are intended to do injury, to a person. They include murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.
There were 9,266 property crimes from January to April, down 6.9 percent from the 9,952 property crimes reported during the same period last year. The FBI’s definition of property crimes includes burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft.
Nationally, violent crime was up 17 percent during the first four months of 2011 while property crime was up 11 percent, HPD said.
The department is still analyzing possible explanations for the drop in the two categories, said Capt. Andrew Lum, HPD spokesman.
