Maui fire damages unoccupied structure
A Maui fire inspector is investigating a fire that heavily damaged an unoccupied wooden structure Monday in Haiku.
Damage was estimated at $200,000 to the structure and $10,000 to the contents.
Fire crews from Paia, Makawao and Kahului responded to 460 Haiku Road, and the first engine on scene found the structure more than 50 percent involved.
The wooden structure was about 2,000 square feet in size, and there was no one living there, fire officials said. The fire was contained at 4:09 p.m.
Alaska visitor dies after canoe capsizes
A 50-year-old tourist from Alaska died Sunday at Straub Clinic & Hospital after the canoe he was in capsized near the Kaiser Bowls surfing site in Waikiki.
The Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man on Monday as Lane Maalona of Anchorage. He had been brought to shore near the Hilton Hawaiian Village lagoon and was undergoing CPR by bystanders when ocean safety personnel arrived at the scene around 4:40 p.m.
He was taken to Straub 20 minutes later and died at 11:41 p.m., officials said.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
