Guide to isle lesbian, gay firms is offered
Lesbian and Gay Businesses of Hawaii is putting together its 2013 Aloha Guide to local businesses. The organization will provide free listings of lesbian and gay businesses.
"The LGBHawaii strives to grow, promote and increase visibility while providing a link between the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community here on Oahu and the businesses that support and respect this segment of the population," the organization said in a news release. "Many of the businesses in this organization are gay-owned and operated or cater directly to this distinctive clientele."

Home Depot hosting career workshop
The Home Depot will hold a career workshop Saturday at its Pearl City location for veterans and active-duty military.
The company’s human resource staff will be on hand to help participants develop job search strategies, fine-tune their résumés and prepare for an interview.
The workshop is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon at the store, 1021 Kamehameha Highway. Those interested must register online at careers.homedepot.com/military.
700 expected at birth and health summit
The Mid-Pacific Conference on Birth and Primal Health, which runs Friday to Monday at the Hawai‘i Convention Center, is expected to bring 700 attendees from around the world as well as leading authorities on prenatal advancements and childbirth.
Strong participation is expected to come from Pacific Rim countries, including Australia and Japan, said Joe Davis, SMG general manager of the convention center.
"Hawaii’s world-class medical facilities and research opportunities make our state an ideal place for medical and scientific meetings of global importance," Davis said.
Last year the convention center hosted five medical and scientific meetings which drew a combined 30,000 participants.
Earlier this year more than 14,500 attendees gathered for the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) 112th Annual Session, and more than 1,000 attendees participated in the 31st annual American Pain Society scientific meeting.
In November the American Medical Association House of Delegates Interim Meeting is expected to bring several thousand people to Hawaii.
Hawaii ranks 14th among most-taxed state
Hawaii residents paid state and local taxes equal to 10.1 percent of their income in fiscal 2010, the 14th-highest rate of any state. Hawaii moved up from fiscal 2009 when it ranked 18th on the list published annually by the Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan tax research organization based in Washington, D.C. State and local taxes paid by Hawaii residents totaled $4,396 per capita. The tax rate was calculated as a percentage of Hawaii’s per capita income, which was $43,509 in fiscal 2010.
Nationally the average state and local tax burden was 9.9 percent of income in fiscal 2010, according to the study.
Hawaii has followed the national trend of rising state and local tax rates since fiscal 2000. Hawaii’s tax rate rose to 10.1 percent from 9.5 percent during that span. Nationally the rate rose to 9.9 percent from 9.3 percent.
