Hawaii in tie for 17th at Cullum Invitational
Hawaii’s men’s golf team finished in a tie for 17th Tuesday at the 20-team Bill Cullum Invitational, played at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif.
The Warriors closed with a 19-over-par 307 for a 54-hole total of 918. San Diego won at 14-under 850.
UH was led by senior Cory Oride (75—222), who tied for 29th. Oride was followed by junior Nainoa Calip (78—229), sophomores Ryan Kuroiwa (76—230) and Reo Saito (78—237) and freshman Justin Chu (78—239).
The Warriors return to host their final tournament of the fall season, the Warrior-Wave Intercollegiate presented by St. Regis Princeville Resort, next Tuesday and Wednesday at the Makai Golf Course on Kauai. Participating teams include Fresno State, Pepperdine, Cal State Fullerton, San Diego, San Diego State, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara.
The UH women’s team will also host its final fall event, the Rainbow Wahine Invitational, the same days at Leilehua. Among the 12 teams are Brigham Young, UC Irvine and Washington State.
BYUH sweeps Dominican in volleyball
Shih Ting Chen had 15 kills to power Brigham Young-Hawaii past Dominican in a Pacific West Conference women’s volleyball match on Tuesday in San Rafael, Calif.
Lauren Hagemayer added 12 kills for the Seasiders (15-2, 10-0).
Hannah Stocking led the way for the Penguins (6-13, 4-7) with seven kills.
Clay and Anae at Kids Fest on Sunday
Olympic gold medalists Bryan Clay and Tumua Anae from Hawaii will be featured at Sunday’s Hawaii Pacific Health Kids Fest. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is free and open to the public at Bishop Museum. Kids registration starts at 9:30 a.m.
There will be 30 hands-on health and wellness workshops, promoting healthy active lifestyles, exercise and nutrition and injury prevention. Workshops include keiki Zumba, the wheel of nutrition and keiki fire safety house. A sports challenge — "Are You Fitter than a Fifth-Grader" — will have Hawaii fifth-graders taking on TV news celebrities in jump rope, long jump, shuttle run and hula hoop.
Participants get free admission to all the workshops and Bishop Museum. There will also be drawings to win bikes and other giveaways.
Clay, who won a silver medal in decathlon in 2004 and gold in 2008, and Anae, a goalie on this year’s gold-medal women’s water polo team, will be available for autographs.
