Local tennis teams place fourth
Two USTA Hawaii Pacific Section teams finished fourth at the national championships over the weekend.
A team from Kihei was fourth out of 32 teams at the USTA Junior Team Tennis 14-under Advanced National Championships, in Cayce, S.C. It lost to a team from Virginia Beach, Va., 59-23, in the third-place match after falling to ATA Dream Team in the semifinals. The Dream Team, from Austin, Texas, won the national title.
Kihei is coached by Joe Baldwin and players are Joey Baldwin, Shayan Shirkhodai, Haumea Velasco, Shayla Shirkhodai, Jessica Pressman, Kylee Kato and Jaylee Yasunaga.
At the same tournament, Waialae Iki 5 White Stars won the Team Spirit Award.
A men’s team from Honolulu called WRSanity also took fourth at the USTA League 4.0 Adult National Championships, in Tucson, Ariz. It lost to Tampa Bay, Fla., 4-1 in the third-place match. Honolulu fell to Northern Virginia by the same score in the semifinals. There were 34 teams.
The Hawaii team is captained by Barry Ng and features Lloyd Yamada, Leo Chiu, Alden Lum, Anthony Pang, Mereck Pang, Gordon Ako and Jared Choi.
Next season, USTA League will offer Adult 18-older, Adult 40-older, Adult 55-older and Mixed 18-older competition in the various rating divisions.
Seasider volleyball sweeps
Behind Stella Chen’s 15 kills, the eighth-ranked BYU-Hawaii women’s volleyball team swept Notre Dame de Namur 25-12, 25-11, 25-11 on Wednesday in Belmont, Calif.
Chen, a sophomore outside hitter, set a BYU-Hawaii record with an .833 hitting percentage (minimum 15 attacks).
The Seasiders (16-2 overall, 11-0 PacWest), who lead the Division II in hitting percentage, hit .538 for the match.
HPU wins golf tri-event
Brigham Young-Hawaii’s Jake Wagstaff recorded the day’s top score — 1-under-par 71 — and Hawaii Pacific shot a 304 to win a tri-match at Ko‘olau Golf Course on Wednesday.
Jayce Yoshida was HPU’s top scorer at 73.
BYUH finished with 309 while Chaminade finished with 325.
