Postseason play is out of the question for the Hawaii women’s soccer team. Exulting in someone else’s downfall isn’t.
The Rainbow Wahine will close out their first season in the Big West Conference trying to play the role of spoiler this week. But they’ll have to do it at two of the toughest places to play in the league, at Long Beach State on Friday and UC Irvine on Sunday.
Long Beach State was the preseason pick to win the league, but it has so fair failed to live up to expectations. The sixth-place Wahine can pile on by severely damaging the fifth-place 49ers’ hopes of making the four-team Big West tournament.
"This game is so important. I’m dying to know what will happen," UH coach Michele Nagamine said from California. "We have absolutely no pressure on us. … I’d like to think our team is capable of playing very well with no pressure on."
UH won both its home games last week against UC Davis and Pacific, but was eliminated from tournament contention because of other results around the league. The best UH can finish is fifth — something Nagamine would consider a victory for the team’s debut in the challenging soccer conference.
The Wahine are still searching for their first Big West road win or draw. They’ve dropped 19 of their past 21 on the mainland going back to 2010.
"It’s the reality and we shook it off, but we’re still going to play as hard as we can for as long as we can," sophomore midfielder Krystal Pascua said of the team’s spoiler goal. "Just try to play the same way that we play at home. Keep mentally focused even though we’re on the road. Something always happens to us (on the mainland). But we’re just going to try to stay focused and stay tough."
