A public service for kumu hula Ellen Castillo, who died Oct. 12 at home, will be held Nov. 3 at 9:30 a.m. at St. George Catholic Church.
Castillo was the founder of Halau Hula o Pukaikapuaokalani, which competed at Merrie Monarch in 1972, the competition’s second year, as well as in 2010. She was 74.
She taught hula and Polynesian dance to hundreds of students spanning several generations in Windward Oahu. She was known for her standard of grace and expressiveness in hula.
St. George Catholic Church is at 41-1323 Kalanianaole Highway in Waimanalo.
