Mililani and Farrington were taking turns lighting up the Aloha Stadium scoreboard when the lights actually went out in Halawa.
A power outage in the third quarter of Friday’s OIA Red semifinal game led to a 28-minute delay. When the lights came back on, quarterback Jarin Morikawa recharged the Trojans as they pulled away for a 42-21 victory over the Governors to earn a spot in the conference title game, as well as the Division I state tournament.
"Never been in that situation before so it was kind of freaky," said Morikawa, who threw two of his five touchdown passes after the blackout.
"The power outage slowed us down a little bit, but once we stared rolling again we were able to get things going again."
While Mililani (9-1) advanced to the title game, Farrington (8-2) will play in the third-place game for the league’s final state tournament berth.
Morikawa completed 22 of 35 passes for 357 yards to counter a huge performance by Farrington running back Tyler Taumua, who rushed for 226 yards on 29 carries with two touchdowns.
"Hat’s off to Farrington, well coached, very physical," Mililani head coach Rod York said. "People were right, we hadn’t seen a running attack like how they bring it, but then again … it’s a real testament to the kids, they picked it up."
Friday’s outcome was a reversal of their OIA Red quarterfinal matchup a year ago, when Taumua ran for 164 yards and Farrington rallied late to end the Trojans’ season.
"All week long we reminded the boys they ended it last year and we just didn’t want that feeling again," Morikawa said.
Taumua covered 39 yards on his first three carries of the game and the Governors took the lead when Montana Liana threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Abraham Silva.
Morikawa went 1-for-5 for 1 yard on Mililani’s first two possessions, then completed seven of his next eight attempts, including touchdown passes to Dakota Turner and Erren Jean-Pierre, who each finished the game with two scoring receptions.
Trojans turnovers contributed to Farrington scoring the final nine points of the second quarter to cut the deficit to 21-15 going into halftime.
Mililani then recovered an onside kick to open the third quarter and Turner’s 20-yard touchdown catch to cap a three-play drive tilted momentum back to Mililani.
"The onside kick was key," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. "We get the ball, I think our guys were ready to score. That’s what we did when we got the ball, we matched that score. Take away that score and put our score up and it’s a big difference."
Farrington answered with a 12-play drive and Taumua scored his second touchdown on a 5-yard run, which would be Farrington’s last score of the game.
"They were beating us with the draw," said Turner, who had six tackles and forced a fumble near the goal line in the fourth quarter. "At halftime the coaches made some adjustments, had the (defensive) ends scooting inside a little more and had the ‘backers fill up the open gaps and that’s what we did."
As the teams lined up for the ensuing kickoff, Aloha Stadium stunningly went dark.
"Both offenses were cold … and (Mililani) got into a better groove," Okimoto said of the momentum-killing delay.
After both teams went three and out, Morikawa heated up again and threw two 55-yard touchdown passes, the first to Jean-Pierre on a streak down the left side and another to Preston Sinn, who took a quick out and turned upfield for the score.
