Developer plans 27-acre, $72M complex in Kihei

Plans are moving ahead for a $72 million complex in downtown Kihei.

The Maui News reported that developers in San Francisco are planning to build a four-story, 150-room hotel as well as a movie theater, restaurants, shops, businesses and medical offices.

Krausz Cos. said it is seeking land use entitlement approvals for the 27-acre project. If the project goes as planned, it should be completed in the summer of 2015.

The project site is along Piikea Avenue just makai of the Piilani Village Shopping Center, and bordered on the east by Liloa Drive.

The site does not include wetlands behind the Kihei Longs Drugs and Azeka Mauka Shopping Center, the developer has said.

22-year police veteran earns ‘Top Cop’ honor

Hawaii County police Sgt. Bradley Freitas was named the department’s "Top Cop" for 2012 by the Law Enforcement/Security Coalition of Hawaii.

Freitas, a 22-year veteran of the department, is commander of Kona Patrol’s four-person Special Enforcement Unit, which tries to reduce major property crimes via crime analysis, informants, enforcement and in coordination with other Police Department sections.

In the past year the unit initiated 188 cases, leading to 48 felony arrests.

The arrests resulted in 114 felony charges.

Police Capt. Richard Sherlock, who nominated Freitas for the honor, said Freitas’ investigative and patrol background inspired the members of the Special Enforcement Unit.

Freitas was recognized at a luncheon Thursday at the Manoa Grand Ballroom in Honolulu.
