Cyr advances to second stage of Q-School
Makawao’s Sam Cyr finished in a tie for seventh at a PGA Tour first-stage qualifier Saturday to advance to next month’s second stage.
Cyr closed with his second straight 73 in Beaumont, Calif., for a four-day total of 2-under-par 286. The top 18 and ties moved on.
Cyr won NAIA national championships his final two years at Point Loma Nazarene, where he was a four-time All-American. He is the reigning Hawaii State Open champ and also won the 2010 Mid-Pacific Open.
Honolulu’s Tadd Fujikawa withdrew from the qualifier in Florence, S.C., after shooting a third-round 79.
Late goals send Seasiders past Vulcans
Brigham Young-Hawaii scored two goals in the closing minutes to rally past Hawaii-Hilo 2-1 in a Pacific West Conference men’s soccer match Saturday in Hilo.
Trailing 1-0, the Seasiders tied the game when Zak Epplette scored in the 88th minute. Chad Nahoolewa then knocked in the game-winner off a Brett Waters corner kick in the 90th minute.
Xavier Fuerte scored the Vulcans’ lone goal in the first half.
BYU-Hawaii improved to 4-7-1 overall, 3-7-1 in conference play. UH-Hilo fell to 3-8-2, 3-7-2.
