Driver charged with negligent homicide
A 29-year-old Waialua man was charged with first-degree negligent homicide Tuesday for allegedly crashing into a Jeep that was in a line of cars waiting for a North Shore road to reopen following Saturday’s tsunami warning. The fiery crash killed the Jeep’s driver.
Police said Donald Halleron was speeding when his truck hit the Jeep, pushing it into a third vehicle which struck a fourth vehicle shortly after midnight on Wilikina Drive.
Witnesses told police the Jeep burst into flames after the impact. The Medical Examiner’s office did not release the name of the man who died.
A 43-year-old woman who was in a vehicle in front of the Jeep was taken to a hospital in serious condition. Four others in the fourth vehicle were taken to a hospital in good condition.
Police arrested Halleron at 8:40 a.m. Sunday at the Queen’s Medical Center. His bail was set at $200,000.
Motorcyclist hits stalled truck on H-3
A Kaneohe man was reported in critical condition after he was thrown from his motorcycle when it hit a stalled pickup truck Monday night on the H-3 freeway.
Police said the accident happened at 10:20 p.m. in the Kaneohe-bound lanes 2.8 miles east of the Moanalua Freeway overpass. A pickup truck had stalled in the fast lane of the freeway. The motorcyclist, a man in his 50s, hit the parked truck on the Halawa side of the tunnels, police said.
The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet. The pickup truck’s driver was not injured.
Crash victim died of blunt force injuries
Betty V. Cabasag, whose car plunged down an embankment into Nuuanu Stream on Monday morning, died of multiple blunt force injuries from the crash, the Medical Examiner’s Office said Tuesday. A determination of the manner of her death is pending further tests.
Firefighters used hydraulic tools to free her from her car, which rolled down to the stream at the end of 55 S. Judd St.
Pedestrian hit by vehicle on Hawaii isle
A woman, about 30, was struck by a motor vehicle at 6:38 p.m. Tuesday in Kona, a fire official said.
The pedestrian was found on the side of Highway 11 and taken in critical condition to Kona Community Hospital.
Police are investigating the accident. Police closed Highway 11 and routed traffic onto Keei and Napoopoo roads. The accident occurred in Kealakekua near the 106-mile marker on Highway 11, or Hawaii Belt Road, the fire official said.
