Seasiders clinch PacWest volleyball title
Stella Chang put down 14 kills, and Lauren Hagemeyer added 12 as Brigham Young-Hawaii clinched the Pacific West Conference women’s volleyball title with a 22-25, 25-15, 25-15, 25-13 victory over Chaminade in Laie on Saturday.
Courtney Skaggs put away 11 kills for the Seasiders (20-2, 15-0).
Kim Spring led Chaminade (6-15, 3-10) with 12 kills.
HPU women sweep past Hawaii-Hilo
Sanoe Recca had 12 kills and Haley Doerfler had nine blocks, including three solo, as Hawaii Pacific topped Hawaii-Hilo 25-18, 25-22, 25-13 in a Pacific West Conference match Saturday at St. Andrew’s Priory gym.
Doerfler added six kills while leading the Sea Warriors’ dominant presence at the net — HPU (15-8, 9-7) outblocked the Vulcans 15.5 to 2. Amanda Moriarty provided three of the Sea Warriors’ seven aces.
Bria Morgan had a match-high 17 kills for the Vulcans (4-15, 4-9).
Tobita and Ishimura win night doubles
The top-seeded team of Ashley Ishimura and Alyssa Tobita defeated No. 2 Yanita Arnaudova and Kahalauamalunonalani Companion 6-4, 6-1 in the final of the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section Women’s Night Doubles at the Ala Moana courts on Saturday.
Ishimura, a state doubles champion at Punahou, and Tobita, the singles winner at states earlier this year for Mililani, dropped just seven games over the three-day tournament.
The event was the second of the Triple Crown of Tennis-Women’s Doubles Series. Ishimura and Tobita also won the first leg, the Oahu Club Women’s Night Doubles.
Ishii’s 16 saves help Silverswords to a tie
The Chaminade women’s soccer team remained winless, but the Silverswords came away with their first draw of the season, tying 10-win Brigham Young-Hawaii 1-1 on Saturday in a Pacific West Conference game at the Saint Louis School field.
Chaminade goalkeeper Lauren Ishii recorded 16 saves, including nine in the second half and two in the first overtime.
Twyla Hamasaki put the Silverswords (0-15-1, 0-13-1) up in the 40th minute after converting a penalty kick, and Sarah Bodily scored the tying goal for the Seasiders (10-4-3, 8-3-3) in the 74th.
» At Saint Louis School, the Brigham Young-Hawaii men got goals from Jacob Sorenson, Bent Jenson and Devin King in a 3-1 victory over Chaminade.
The Seasiders improved to 5-8-3 and 4-8-2. The Silverswords, who avoided the shutout when Sam Galloway scored in the 83rd minute, fell to 2-11-3 and 2-9-3.
» At Hilo, Rea Laudat scored in the fifth minute of overtime as the Academy of Art women downed Hawaii-Hilo 2-1.
The game was scoreless until Hannah Emmett’s goal in the 82nd minute gave the Urban Knights (7-11, 5-9) the lead. But Taylor Wright netted a goal eight minutes later for the Vulcans (5-12, 3-11), sending the game to overtime.
Japan tops Hawaii in Asia Pacific Junior Cup
Team Japan won 91⁄2 of the available 16 points Saturday to capture the sixth annual Asia Pacific Junior Cup golf tournament 19-13 at the Waikoloa Beach Resort.
The final round of the three-day Ryder Cup-style tournament was singles match play on the Kings’ Course.
Hawaii, which came into the day needing 10 points to overtake Japan, got wins from John Oda, Jameson Keiley, Rose Huang, Colby Takushi and Eric Le, as well as halves from Hana Furuichi, Ciera Min and Kyosuke Kevin Hara.
HPU runner earns all-region honors
Polina Babkina of Hawaii Pacific was the top local finisher at the NCAA Cross Country West Regional on Saturday at Kahuku Golf Course, placing 16th in the 170-runner women’s field to earn all-region honors.
Babkina finished the 6-kilometer race in 22 minutes, 15.09 seconds to lead the host Sea Warriors, who placed 19th. Alaska Anchorage’s Susan Tanui won in 21:18.50. Brigham Young-Hawaii was 15th, Chaminade was 24th and Hawaii-Hilo was last in 25th place.
Chico State won both the men’s and women’s team titles.
BYUH, led by Spencer Deavila’s 22nd-place finish in 33:14, placed seventh out of 15 teams in the 8K men’s race. The Sea Warriors placed 15th.
