Kaia Parnaby has quite a bit to keep her busy this fall.
Her afternoon schedule includes helping the training staff at Hawaii football practices as part of a kinesiology class. She then grabs her glove and hustles next door to Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium to get in her pitching work.
The spring could be pretty hectic for the senior as well.
In moving into the lead role with the UH pitching staff, Parnaby is anticipating a significant bump in her innings count once the regular season rolls around in February.
"She knows she has to come back and toe the rubber at least 40 times for us," UH coach Bob Coolen said. "She has to work out hard and has to be in tip-top shape.
"We’ve done it before where she’s been the No. 2 and Stephanie (Ricketts) was the workhorse. Now the roles are reversed."
Parnaby was part of a dynamic pitching combo with Ricketts — who completed her UH softball career in May and recently joined the Rainbow Wahine basketball team — the last three years, and began the fall exhibition season by taking the ball in two of UH’s three games in the Fall Paradise Classic this weekend.
Parnaby struck out 14 over five innings while giving up one hit in an 11-1 win over Chaminade in the first game of UH’s doubleheader on Saturday.
She pitched a total of nine innings in the tournament in wins over Kumamoto International College on Friday and Chaminade on Saturday and struck out 25 of the 32 batters she faced.
"So far it’s going awesome," Parnaby said of fall practice. "This helped getting the kinks out and getting the first two games under way."
Keiki Carlos is vying for the second spot in the rotation and started Saturday’s tournament finale against Kumamoto.
The freshman from Mid-Pacific Institute earned the complete-game victory in UH’s 15-5 win.
She gave up five hits and one earned run and finished with nine strikeouts after throwing an inning of relief on Friday to finish out a perfect game in UH’s 19-0 win over Kumamoto.
"(Friday) night there was a little nerves, but my teammates were there to calm me down and told me to have fun," said Carlos, who also went a combined 3-for-4 with a double and a home run in Saturday’s doubleheader.
The UH offense pounded out 55 hits, including nine home runs, over three games. Carlos, senior Kelly Majam and freshman Kristina Akiona homered against Chaminade. Sharla Kliebenstein and Kaile Nakao homered in the fourth inning against Kumamoto and senior Jori Jasper hit a two-run shot to left in the fifth. Akiona added a solo shot in the sixth.
Chaminade defeated Kumamoto 9-6 in the first game of the day. Chaminade shortstop Rayna Strom-Okimoto hit two home runs and drove in six runs for the Silverswords. Her double against UH was the lone hit Parnaby gave up over the weekend.
UH’s fall schedule continues with the alumnae game on Friday at 6 p.m. at RWSS.
